CHARACTER INFO.
Character Name: Darkholme, Raven. ( Mystique )
Canon: X-Men: First Class, right after Charles tells her to hang back and guard the plane.
Character Appearance:
human form:

true form:

Character Age: 20-26. her mutation is tricky like that. It's assumed that she's only a couple of years younger than her older brother Charles, but she ages slower, so while she might be about 25-26 years-old, she only looks about 18-20. we're never given a specific age.
Pick A Number: 074, 002.

Canon Setting:
X-Men: First Class takes place in 1962, where everything is pretty much the same as it is in the real world ( follows the same historical timeline ), except that there are people with genetic mutations ( basically, superpowers ) being forced to hide what they can do from the rest of the world. The trick of the X-Men movieverse is that they weave mutant issues in with the issues we commonly know/have in the real world, like in this case, the film takes place during the Cuban Missile Crisis, which, in the film, is being aggravated by a mutant named Sebastian Shaw, who has plans of using the potential nuclear war as a means of pushing mutants to the top of the food chain, so to speak.

Character History: General XFC Wiki.

Character Personality:
On the very surface, Raven Darkholme is blue. No, really. And her true (blue) appearance is part of the reason why, on first impression, she might seem a little guarded, using snarky humor or bluntness as a means of deflecting. Maybe if she were "normal" and didn't have to hide her true form behind the blonde All-American mask she wears everyday, she'd be more trusting of people at first, but she's not. She has a secret that, throughout her entire life, has only brought on negative reactions when revealed, so she does tend to keep new acquaintances at arms' length. Well, there was one time telling her secret went well, which is why Charles Xavier has grown to be her best friend. He had to make the first move, of course, by exposing himself as a mutant as well. But! All it takes to get on Raven's good side is that spark of understanding, acceptance. She's more than willing to make friends, you just have to show her she has nothing to be afraid of. Of course, she'll never admit this, but it's true.

Ah, and being a mutant, yes. That certainly is a strong enough ice breaker for her to give you the benefit of the doubt right away.

Once Raven feels like she can trust you, she can be the most loyal friend you'll ever make. Ridiculously trusting and trust-worthy, and protective, and proud. She finds the good in people, the very best qualities, and isn't afraid to voice that fact either. She is constantly trying to show Hank that he has nothing to feel insecure about, giving him compliments more often than not, and she actually means them. She likes finding those layers in people, sifting through the quirks and even finding reasons to say they should be proud of those too. When she's around friends, she's still snarky and opinionated, but in a different way than she is around strangers.

Meeting the other mutants (that eventually form the X-MEN) was such a blessing for her, in ways that she never imagined. She could always be herself around Charles, but having a group of peers her own age she could train with, and get to know, helped her grow in a lot of ways she probably should have a few years earlier. The main thing she discovered about herself is confidence, through self awareness and self respect. After years of feeling like an outsider, someone who would never fit in because she was too different, and sometimes simply hating her true form, she's starting to realize that it shouldn't matter what others think. It's been a very slow process, turning her negative opinion of herself into something good, but she's finally getting there. It's mostly just a matter of gaining the courage to act on that confidence, break away from the norm of always hiding and trying to blend in that she's grown into and try to fight for what she believes in.

In finding that courage in herself, her true intentions and outlooks really shine. She cares so much about mutantkind, now that she knows there are more like her in the world, and the idea of any of them feeling alone, or trapped, makes her want to fight, more than anything. Fight for them, and for herself.

Of course, there's still a part of her that is very scared at the idea of revealing herself to the world. Her entire life she's kept her mutation a secret, the fear of being called a freak and being shoved away (the way her parents did when she was just a child) fueling that need for secrecy more than anything else. Charles might have to remind her to be careful when she slips her shift, but that uncertainty of whether or not she could ever be accepted in society, in her true form, is what keeps her from choosing, one day, to walk around as her true self in public.

Her mutation is something she's only now learning to truly accept and cherish, and there are still times when she'll turn from friendly to upset in a flash if she thinks you're being insensitive. Towards herself, or her friends. She's quick to the defense at times, but usually only when she feels that someone is being unfairly judged.

When she's not being forced to deal with the secrecy and stress that comes with her mutation, Raven can actually be really fun. She likes having a good time as much as anyone else, often being the one to try and get everybody to loosen up when things are tense, or just getting boring. There's a playful side to her that comes out when she's around friends, the side of her that likes to come up with secret-agent code names and dance around to the Beatles while they're hiding out in a military base. Before Mission: Take Down Shaw, we see Raven and Charles out at the pub, being very normal and having a fun time out. (She even cheers her brother on as he takes on a yard of beer - she's so proud!) She can be mature for her age, but most of the time she chooses not to be. Not when Charles has a habit of acting like an old fart, taking on the role of cautious and responsible, leaving her to be a little more carefree and silly. She's gotten used to that balance.

That said, before the day the CIA told Charles that there were other mutants in the world besides him and Raven, he was really all she had. And she liked it this way! She trusts Charles with anything, and most if not all of her morals and views on certain things she learned from him. It was hard not to trust and rely on him from the start, seeing as he was the one that found her as a child, and convinced his parents to give her a home. They grew up like siblings in that giant Mansion in New York, inseparable really, and she went so far as to follow him to England while he attended Oxford. This was all because of that trust, faith in the fact that she knew he was always looking out for her, and that she wanted to be there for him as well. Charles had dreams of discovering more mutants and helping mutantkind to grow and feel accepted, and Raven has every intention of following just the same, helping him achieve just that.

However, there is always one issue they never seemed to agree on, that one thing that always strains their friendship, and that is the idea that Raven has to keep her mutation hidden from the world. Completely. For her own safety, really! Which made sense, when she was little, but now? Now she kind of hates it. It makes her feel as if she should be ashamed of her true form, because the rest of the world would be. And she knows he's right, on some level, being kicked out by her parents was proof enough, but now that she's getting older, she's starting to make her own decisions, form her own opinions on the topic. Either way, while it might be their 'elephant in the room', she isn't letting it ruin the good parts of their relationship.

Alternatively, over the past few weeks, she's gotten to know two other mutants who have both started to drastically change her view on things, in their own ways. First, there's Hank McCoy, who like her has a physical mutation that he is forced to hide from the world. She thinks he's incredible though, endlessly impressed by his strength and intelligence, but the boy is very much focused on doing everything he can to try and rid himself of his mutated feet. Not the abilities, just the physical manifestation of it. At first she agrees, and they bond over their desire just to feel normal, but then, through her admiration of him (not just the fact that she as a bit of a crush, but more), she comes to realize that they shouldn't be ashamed of their appearance. He helps her see that maybe if she can appreciate his mutation, and all that comes with it, maybe humans will come to admire her form as well. Maybe. Hank certainly doesn't feel the same though, and they disagree on this until the very moment I'm taking her from in canon - she refuses to inject the serum he's created, using her blood, to try and hide their mutation.

The other driving force in her views as of late, is Erik Lehnsherr. He was the first mutant she and Charles met after the CIA contacted them, and he definitely made the biggest impression. At first he was just Charles' new friend, which made her more jealous nervous than she'd ever admit, but then, through embarrassing yet honest comments, was the one that made her realize that she shouldn't be ashamed of what she is, and most importantly, what she really looks like. While Charles has always told her to hide, Erik counters and tells her he thinks that she should be proud in the way she looks. That she's unique, but she has nothing to be ashamed of. This, ultimately, is the internal struggle she's been dealing with through the entire mess with Shaw, and what she'll probably be trying to figure out for a long while. Will she ever learn to accept and admire herself as much as she adores all the other mutants she's met?

Character Powers:
Mystique, in canon, is a bit of a physical phenomenon, in that she has much more control over every aspect of her body than a normal human. Her cells regenerate so fast that she could (according to Hank McCoy) look like a teenager well into her later years. Well, a blue teenager, but that's a minor detail. Of course, she could look like whatever she wants, age aside. Her main power is that she can shapeshift, into anyone. Not just by basic physical appearance, but she can duplicate the person completely, into their clothes, and can match their voice as well. Finger prints, retina scans, they all match perfectly. She also has great strength, agility, and endurance. She isn't automatically gifted with super-strength, she has to lift weights and train, but her body strengthens quicker than a normal human. As for her specific skills... she hasn't actually picked up anything too awesome yet. She's only just accepted her powers, and she's been training to get into better physical shape, but any fighting skills she has are instinctual, and she has no idea how to handle weapons yet, beyond "point and shoot". ..not that she's even touched a gun yet, but. Yeah.

CHARACTER SAMPLES.
First Person POV:
[ Raven... really has no idea what this thing is. at first she thought it was a television with a live feed, but the longer she just stares at the thing, the more clear it becomes that it's- It must have been a walky-talky of some kind! Only with a video feed, somehow, despite that being kind of unheard of, where she's from. She's sure Charles is finding it all very groovy, if he's here. Which of course he is, they couldn't have been separated. Not now.

But it didn't matter how weird this all was, not if this thing was the only way of getting in touch with anyone she knew. She turns it on, quite sure it's just an audio but well, it's video.

which means, for the record, everyone is seeing this blue face on the screen. yup.
]

Hello? [ she's looking at the comm like it's immediately going to talk back, but. right. it wasn't a telephone. or maybe the message took time to send. whatever. ]

Hi, um. Well. I'm not sure how to directly call the people that this message is intended for yet, so. I'm sorry for clogging up the airwaves, or. Whatever. [ her nose scrunches because okay, wow, technology certainly isn't her expertise, and she had no idea how to talk about it. ] But I really need to get in touch with a few people, see if they're here. Which I'm sure all of you have been trying to do, but it's really important because we were sort of in the middle of trying to prevent a --big thing, and being here could kind of completely ruin any chances of us being successful. And they're... my family so I can't just leave without at least leaving them a note. [ wow, sound more like a child, Raven. really. try. ]

Anyway, I'll try and make this quick.

If any of you guys can hear me, this is Raven. [ there's a tiny, tiny laugh. ] Mystique. [ grin! so proud of herself. ] Yes, I'm calling myself that over the radio because our code names are way far out, no matter what you guys say. I hope if you're here, you're all safe. Actually I just... kinda hope you're here. I'm not ready to be on my own again, if it's all the same to you guys.

[ ... wow, so. that was sharey. she's just going to clear her throat now. ]

Let me know you're okay, please. We should meet up as soon as we can.

(( this is her poly-chromatic intro here for the comments, and here's, three, more examples, but they're all older than a month, aaah. just wanted to include them for extra examples. ))

Third Person POV:
[ okay, so being back in the plane while everyone else has jobs to do, fighting for what they believe is right? is terrible. it's the worst. it's so high up on the list of things Raven Darkholme doesn't like about her life that it might have hit a record. there should be a separate list, just for this moment. Charles tells her to hang back and every bone in her body screams at her to argue, but instead she just gives him a leveled fine and backs away from the exit.

so she's in there, right, and Charles and Moira are sitting up near the cockpit being useful, and she's about ready to scream, honestly, which sounds like an immature thing to do right now, but this isn't what she trained for. this isn't what she spent weeks building up her strength and self-confidence for. she wants to scream because this isn't fair, and it isn't right. she has just as much a right as anybody else to-
]

-- arkholme, are you there-? Can you hear me?

[ no, she had no idea there was a radio back here, too. and she doesn't know why someone's calling for her on it, but she doesn't think twice before picking up the little handheld receiver and holding down the button ]

Hi?

Oh, thank god. -- Raven -- need your help. -- Urgent, please, listen--

You need my help? I can't really hear you- [ she looks up to the front of the plane, almost calls for Charles, but his hand is to his temple and Moira's yelling into the radio up front, and no. no, she doesn't need to ask them permission or anything else. they're asking for her. ..whoever it is talking to her over the radio. ] Who is this? Erik? Is everything okay?

There's no time -- need you -- only you can --

I think there's something wrong with the radio. Try Charles, he's right here, he's still here to help you.

It has to be you, Mystique! Can you help? Can you do this for me?

Yeah! Yes, of course. Of course I can. Anything. Just tell me what to do.

CHARACTER ITEMS.
Pick a Team: Orange!
Mission Freebie: A handgun. She's going to ask for this, and assume these people are like Charles who will say yes just to get her to agree, and then sUDDENLY she has a gun of her own and that's scary ( but amazing ). Basically it'll be the reason why she learns how to use a weapon.
Personal Item or Weapon: I honestly can't think of anything, so. N/A

Character Inventory:
- ( 1 ) totally swanky flightsuit.
